Sean Mason joined Peter Solomon on Jazz88 FM to discuss A Breath of Fresh Air, touching on how growing up in the South shaped his music, his early love of jazz, his recent collaborations with Catherine Russell and Mahogany Browne, and how the conflicting personalities within his quintet make the music more interesting.
Mason walked through the layers of music he grew up with: 70s soul and funk at home, courtesy of his mother's records (Earth, Wind & Fire among them), gospel every Sunday at church, and whatever was popular at school, pop and R&B, with jazz nowhere on his radar at the time. Ray Charles, his mother's favorite artist, became the bridge that eventually led him to jazz. Mason also spoke about the move to New York as a turning point, one he credits with pulling him out of his shell; without it, he's said, he might still be playing the same music he was a decade ago.
